Since 1995, ZAPATA has conducted site characterizations, remedial designs, range clearance, and removal actions at Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC) and Recovered Chemical Warfare Materiel (RCWM) sites throughout CONUS and OCONUS. We facilitate teamwork between Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies and the local communities to meet stakeholder objectives.
ZAPATA provided all MEC and sweep personnel to conduct Range Survey activities to identify, record, and dispose of MEC related items and provide UXO escort to support ecological and archaeological surveys of more than 1000 acres within the impact areas. This pacific project site is an a’a’ lava flow creating extremely rugged terrain and physically demanding site access and working conditions.
ZAPATA was tasked to perform the Munitions Response services and construction support necessary for the construction of the proposed DMPTR located at Fort Hood, Texas. ZAPATA used three UXO teams to perform a surface and subsurface MEC clearance of the DMPTR construction footprint areas. These areas were designated by the Government as posing a medium to high risk of encountering MEC during construction. Munitions Debris (MD) located within the DMPTR construction footprint was inspected, determined to be non-hazardous, and turned over to a local scrap dealer for shredding or incineration. After removing approximately 4,000cy of debris and soil, the tank remnants were taken outside of the footprint. The soil was searched for MEC and returned to the hole once cleared. The MEC surface and subsurface clearance of 86.19 acres resulted in the disposal of 130 MEC items. There were 56,100lbs of munitions debris scrap inspected, certified, and transferred for disposal. Also, 403,382lbs of target debris were removed from the construction footprint.
ZAPATA completed a Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC) Investigation and Removal Action at the Schofield Barracks Urban Assault Course (UAC), Battle Area Complex (BAX), and Qualification Training Range (QTR). The project consisted of approximately 1,500 acres, in multiple locations, within an existing larger training range. ZAPATA mobilized 50 UXO technicians and support staff from the mainland and hired more than 50 Hawaii-based staff within two weeks of NTP. We completed surface and subsurface removal of 1,500 acres within the active range complex. ZAPATA safely identified and removed 672,151 metallic anomalies, and 6,721 UXO items were disposed by detonation. We recovered, inspected, processed, and recycled 1,750,000 lbs of MD and 190,000 lbs of range-related debris (RRD) and targets. In addition, ZAPATA leveled and screened 50,000cy of soil from small arms berms for MEC. This is the largest range clearance project ever completed by USACE.
