Select Water Resources Projects

Campania Minera Punitaqui

ZAPATA acted as Owner’s Representative and Project Manager for the construction of an earth dam to hold the mine tailings produced by CMP copper mining operations in northern Chile. ZAPATA performed QA/QC, approved change orders and payments, project modifications, and the overall execution of the job. The dam is 123 feet high, 2,000 feet long and 550 feet wide at its base. The structure is lined with a 1.5 millimeter membrane to reduce water infiltration and it will be monitored with ten monitoring wells installed along the dam. Once completed, the dam will be able to hold 3.8 million tons of water and solids.

Chile – Lepanto Landfill Leachate Treatment System

ZAPATA contributed to design and building of certain components for the operation of Lepanto Landfill. As part of this project ZAPATA added a train of pre-filtered gravel filters for the RIL and a carbon filter after treatment to significantly reduce the consumption of chemicals during the operation of the plant.

High Pressure Fire Protection System Evaluation

ZAPATA provided an evaluation of the firewater storage tanks, water supply systems, fire pumps, 25,000ft of underground high-pressure piping, and fire suppression systems in 14 aircraft hangars. The fire protection systems are approximately 50 years old and have been neglected for decades. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) was used to locate and differentiate the underground high-pressure fire protection piping from domestic water lines and locate isolation valves segregating the high-pressure piping from the hangars. Final corrective measures were identified that would bring the entire fire protection system up to current NFPA and UFC code requirements.

Lake Access Upgrades

For this project, ZAPATA completed site layout, grading plans, erosion and sedimentation control plans, final construction plans, construction specifications, and construction management. Upgrades include the addition of two separate parking areas, paved roads, ADA parking, fishing piers, concrete walkways, gravel walkways, swimming area, bathhouse, well, septic system, picnic shelters, picnic tables, and planning for future amenities, including RV camping sites, additional bathhouse, sanitary dumping station, and connecting trails.
