ZAPATA recently hired Grayson Haines and Matthew Panko. These former interns are Class of 2020 graduates from their respective North Carolina universities. While at school, they spent summer vacations and breaks at ZAPATA gaining valuable hands-on experience within their fields of study.
Grayson Haines graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering; he also minored in Business Administration. Mr. Haines is preparing for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE exam) to receive Engineer in Training (EIT) certification. In the meantime, he provides CAD modeling and HVAC and plumbing designs for DoD clients under the guidance of ZAPATA’s licensed engineers. He revises drawings for new construction and renovation projects based upon client and engineer feedback, in addition to performing calculations and specifications review.
“As a mechanical engineering intern, I had the opportunity to experience each step of the design process that I studied in school and apply it to practical situations. I traveled with the team to the jobsites to see firsthand the projects that I was working on, aside from the computer screen, which really put things into perspective.”
Matthew Panko received a Bachelor of Science in Building Science: Architectural Technology and Design from Appalachian State University. He is an architect in training at ZAPATA, and he is also a student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte working on his Master of Architecture degree.
While serving as a ZAPATA intern, Mr. Panko participated in project and architectural meetings and learned about each phase of the design and construction process. He addressed callouts and drawing revisions; compiled drawings for submission; and reviewed comments from the clients and engineers responsible for overseeing the projects.
“Throughout my internship, I learned key information such as the strict processes and the precision that is necessary when completing architectural drawings. Working on drawing revisions and reading the comments helped me to better understand the process, and it also allowed me to create more realistic renderings.”
ZAPATA is pleased with Grayson’s and Matthew’s progress and dedication to the company—we are delighted to have them on the team.
