Will Hewitt Joins ZAPATA

Will Hewitt began his electrical engineering career as a summer intern at ZAPATA, and we are pleased to announce that he is now a full-time employee.

Mr. Hewitt will continue his work, under the supervision of a professional engineer, on substation and transmission power station upgrades and security system designs to serve the needs of the firm’s growing client list of major utility companies. As an electrical designer he will participate in site visits to document conditions, plan and design electrical systems and components, and prepare electrical detailing and specifications for construction drawings.

Mr. Hewitt earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, with a concentration in power and energy systems and a minor in mathematics, from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC). His UNCC senior design project examined scheduling for planned power outages on a modified IEEE 118-bus transmission system. He and his team studied the applicable NERC standards and methods, conducted power flow analyses in MATLAB to test the N-1 contingency on the transmission system, and developed GUI software to display a schedule for the planned outages.

While in high school, Mr. Hewitt developed an interest in engineering. He was admitted into his school’s STEM Energy and Sustainability Academy, and for three years straight he was a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society.

Mr. Hewitt enjoys a variety of sports: At UNCC, he was an officer and member of the Disc Golf Club and was named the 2024 College Disc Golf D3 Men’s Individual Champion; he is currently a member of ZAPATA’s volleyball team and Ironman relay team.
